Salzkammergut, Austria
The Salzkammergut region, known in the Czech Republic as the "Salt Chamber", is one of the most picturesque corners of Austria – a region where wild Alpine nature meets a history stretching back a thousand years. It spans three federal states - Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria - and is rightly counted amongst the most sought-after destinations for active holidays and relaxation in the heart of nature.
The name ‘Solná komora’ refers to salt, the "white gold" that has shaped both the local landscape and its history. As far back as the Celts, salt was mined here in the vicinity of Hallstatt - this is the site of one of the oldest documented salt deposits in the world. Salt mining brought both wealth and strategic importance to the region – evidence of this is the famous horse-drawn railway from Gmunden to České Budějovice, built in the 19th century to export salt to Bohemia.
Today, the Salzkammergut is above all synonymous with clear lakes, steep peaks, fragrant pastures and typical Alpine architecture. The landscape around the Dachstein massif and Lake Hallstatt was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 - and it’s no wonder. The water and rocks here create breathtaking scenery that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in Europe.
Via ferrata above Lake Hallstatt
A fantastic experience for those who love being active in the mountains. The via ferratas, rated B–C in difficulty, lead along smooth rock faces, ridges and chimneys, across steel ladders, footbridges and viewing platforms. The climb, with views of the lake and the Dachstein, is unforgettable.
A tour of Hallstatt and a boat trip on the lake
A leisurely stroll through the historic town, which is reflected on the lake’s surface like a postcard. We’ll soak up the atmosphere of the narrow streets and wooden houses, and enjoy a circular boat trip, which can be combined with a spot of shopping in the stylish local shops.
Cycling around the Loser massif
We’ll start the day at the Blaa Alm mountain hut and set off on a 17-kilometre downhill ride through a picturesque valley along the Rettenbach mountain stream to Bad Ischl. We’ll then continue at a leisurely pace to Lake Hallstatt
The Five Fingers Viewpoint
This iconic viewpoint, towering more than 400 metres above the chasm, features five ‘fingers’ – viewing platforms, each offering a different perspective on the mountain scenery. One of the most beautiful viewpoints in the entire Alps.
The Imperial Town of Bad Ischl
The charm of the little town favoured by Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Sisi. We’ll take a stroll through the park around the imperial villa and visit the historic centre, with its pleasant spa-town atmosphere.
Caving in the Koppenbrüllerhöhle
An adventurous guided expedition into the heart of the mountain. The cave is actively shaped by water flowing from the Dachstein massif and offers a thrilling experience as you make your way through narrow passages, along suspended walkways and up rope ladders.
A trip to Mount Schafberg
The area’s most striking landmark, offering views of up to 15 lakes. Take the historic rack-and-pinion railway up, or – for fit walkers – hike to the top; the reward is a breathtaking view. You can also visit the iconic mountain hut at the summit.
